  Evaluation of Antiulcer activity of Mussaenda frondosa Linn leaf extracts using Aspirin induced ulce

Mussaenda frondosa Linn has been used to treat a wide assortment of diseases. The objective of our study was to evaluate the antiulcer effect of alcoholic (AE) and aqueous (AqE) extract of leaves of Mussaenda frondosa in albino rats. Present study was designed to investigate the antiulcer effect by using different models of gastric ulceration in rats. Acute gastric ulceration in rats was produced by oral administration of noxious chemicals aspirin. Anti‐secretary studies were undertaken using pylorus‐ligated technique. Gastric total acid output was estimated in the pylorus ligated rats. Gastric tissue was also examined histological. AE and AqE were administered in the dose of 200 mg/kg orally in all experiments. Famotidine was used as a reference drug. The antiulcer activity was assessed by determining and comparing the ulcer index in the test drug group with that of the vehicle (negative) control group and standard (positive) control group. AE at the dose of 200 mg/kg produced a significant reduction in the ulcer index. AE significantly inhibited gastric mucosal damage induced by aspirin. In pylorus‐legated rats, AE significantly reduced the basal gastric acid secretion. The antiulcer effect was further confirmed histologically. The anti‐ulcer activity of AqE was however, less than that of AE and standard drug. The present finding suggests that protective effect of AE might have been mediated by both anti‐secretary and cytoprotective mechanisms. Moreover, further insight into the precise mechanism of action is essential to exploit the complete potency of AE and increase its usage in contemporary medicine.
