  Microsponge Drug Delivery System: An Emerging Tool for Topical Drug Delivery System

Microsponge technology is emerging tool for topical drug delivery system (TDDS). Microsponge Delivery system (MDS) facilitates the controlled release of active drug into the skin in order to reduce systemic exposure and minimize local cutaneous reactions to active drugs. Microsponge consists of macroporous Beads, typically 10-25 microns in diameter, loaded with active agent. When applied to the skin, the microsponge releases its active ingredient on a time mode and also in response to other stimuli (rubbing, temperature, pH, etc) that are used mostly for topical and recently for oral administration. Microspnge delivery system entraps diffent types of drug with good efficiency and can be formulated into gel, ointment, creams. Microsponge can be prepared by methods such as Liquid-liquid Suspension and Quasi Emulsion Solvent Diffusion method. Drug released from microsponge is by mechanism which are Pressure change, Solubility, Temperature change pH triggered systems. Evaluation is done by using the parameter such as particle size determination, morphology and surface topography of microsponges, determination of loading efficiency and production yield, determination of true density, characterization of pore structure, compatibility studies, polymer/monomer composition, resiliency (viscoelastic properties), dissolution studies, kinetics of release.
