  PHARMACOGNOSTICAL, PHYTOCHEMICAL AND PHARMACOLOGICAL VARIATIONS IN VARIOUS SPECIES OF OCIMUM GENUS-
   

Ocimum a highly ranked genus among all the important herbs used for their medicinal and therapeutic value. The species under Ocimum genus from the family Lamiaceae is characterized on the basis of leaves and habitat. Ocimum has been extensively used in Ayurvedic system of medicine for various ailments including capability of lowering plasma glucose, antibacterial, antimicrobial, hyperlipidemic, insecticidal, CNS stimulant, memory enhancer and bronchitis etc. But due to variations in their chemical constituents they show variable pharmacological activities as, the major chemical constituent of Ocimum basilicum is Linalool (29.68%), Ocimum canum is Camphor (39.5-39.8%), Ocimum gratissimum is Eugenol (68.81%), Ocimum kilimandcharicum is Linalool (41.94%) and Camphor (17.02%) and in Ocimum sanctum it is β-Bisabolene (13-20%) and Eugenol (4-9%). This review article highlights the variations in pharmacognostical, phytochemical and pharmacological properties of various species of Ocimum such as Ocimum basilicum, Ocimum canum, Ocimum gratissimum, Ocimum kilimandcharicum and Ocimum sanctum.
