IDENTIFICATION OF CARBOHYDRATE COMPONENTS IN ZYMOMONAS MOBILIS STRAIN (2427) DURING ETHANOL PRODUCTI

Zymomonas mobilis is an ethanol producing bacteria, used to study the role of carbohydrates during ethanol production. This bacterial sp. has got the widespread applications from baking to fermenting the alcoholic beverages. In the recent past ethanol and other advanced biofuels have emerged as promising and renewable alternate to the domestic transportation fuel. Zymomonas mobilis has got several advantages over other commercially ethanol producing organisms the most important being the rapid hydrolysis of sucrose. The present study was undertaken to identify the carbohydrate components in the Zymomonas mobilis strain (2427) under varying concentrations of carbon source. The study has confirmed the presence of glycogen like components in Zymomonas mobilis (2427). The presence of cell surface α-glucan was also confirmed in Zymomonas mobilis (2427) which plays an important role in flocculation.
