Effect of ethanolic extract of Solanum lycopersicum and Vitis vinifera on anthropometric parameters

Obesity is a crippling, stigmatized, costly and life shortening disease that has no single metabolic origin. Experimental obesity was produced by feeding high fat diet and drug induced obesity was produced as a side effect of long-term administration of neuroleptics. There are two FDA approved drugs orlistat and Sibutramine to treat obesity but both drugs have a lot of side effects. Solanum lycopersicum and Vitis vinifera is known to have lipid-lowering effects and antioxidant activities. We use ethanolic extract of Solanum lycopersicum and Vitis vinifera for the treatment of anthropometric parameters of obesity in diet and drug induced obesity. High fat diet and sulpride both significantly increases the anthropometric parameters and tissue TBARS levels in the obase rats. Different doses of ethanolic extract of Solanum lycopersicum and Vitis vinifera significantly decreases the anthropometric parameters and tissue TBARS levels in rats and also increases the antioxidant enzymes in obase rats.
