KAMALAHARA DASEMANI – A NOVEL GROUP OF TEN HERBS USEFUL IN VIRAL HEPATITIS AND OTHER LIVER DISEASES

The signs and symptoms of Viral Hepatitis and other forms of Jaundice are included in the disease description of Kamala described by Ayurvedic classics. The disease description of Kamala along with treatment was delineated under Panduroga (Anemia) Chikitsa. Charaka introduced the drugs classification into 50 groups basing on pharmaco- therapeutic profiles. For each group in total ten drugs were included which have become popularly known as Dasahemanigana (Each of these groups is formed by 10 drugs which are popularly known as Dasemani). Charaka also advised that a wise physician by exercising his own intelligence exclude the drugs listed by him and substitute with other drugs according to requirement of the patient. Ayurveda offers the most dependable herbal drugs with a proven value for viral hepatitis and other liver diseases. Though Charakasamhita enumerates many a simple herbal formulations in the treatment of Kamala, but no exclusive group was introduced for it. In view of non-availability of specific treatment for certain liver diseases in modern medicine, scientists have initiated research to screen the Ayurvedic drugs for their hepato-protective action and found that many of the herbs indicated in the Ayurvedic classics are having significant hepato-protective action. The research findings confirmed that the herbs namely- Bhunimba, Punarnava, Haridra, Bhringaraja, Yashtimadhu, Bhumyamalaki, Katuki, Chitraka, Kiratatikta and Guduchi have shown significant hepato-protective activity. Keeping in view the latest scientific research studies, the herbs namely Haritaki, Vibhitaki, Amalaki, Gudhuchi, Katuki, Haridra, Daruharidra, Bhunimba, Yashti and Shallaki are grouped under “Kamalahara Dasahemani”.
