  FREE RADICAL SCAVENGING POTENTIALS AND LEVEL OF SOME HEAVY METALS IN Pleurotus flabellatus BERK AND
   

Tissue damage due to oxidative species is implicated in the pathophysiology of many diseases. This study evaluated the level of antioxidant elements and the antioxidant activity of the terpenoid-rich chloroform extract of the fresh fruiting bodies of the edible mushroom Pleurotus flabellatus. The chloroform extract (CF) of the fresh fruiting bodies of Pleurotus flabellatus was obtained by cold maceration. Phytochemical identification was by using standard phytochemical screening reagents while preliminary antioxidant activity was by using 2,2-diphenyl picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)  spray reagent on developed pre-coated silica HF254 Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) plates with chloroform as mobile phase. Antioxidant elements were determined on the ash obtained from the fruiting bodies using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometric technique. Only terpenoids and steroids were detected in the CF (0.4 %).Components with Rf: 0.07, 0.21, 0.61, 0.79 showed antioxidant activity on TLC. Trace elemental analysis showed appreciable levels of the antioxidant element: Se (1.1mg/kg) < Mn (3.7mg/kg) < Fe (8.2mg/kg) < Zn (14.3mg/kg); with least but appreciable level of Pb (0.24mg/kg). This study confirmed the ethno-medicinal and nutraceutical uses of this mushroom in the treatment of ailments associated with free radical generation.
