PRELIMINARY PHYTOCHEMICAL AND IN-VITRO ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF THE WHOLE PLANT OF ACANTHOSPERMUM HIS

Acanthospermum hispidum DC is a branched herb up to 60 cm tall. The stems of these plants are covered with bushy hairs and smaller glandular hairs. It is used for the treatment of jaundice, malaria, vomiting, cephalgias, head-ache, abdominal pain, convulsions, stomachache, constipation, eruptive fever, snake bite, epilepsy, blennorrhoea, hepato-biliary disorders, malaria, microbial infection and viral infections. Acanthospermum hispidum DC appears to contain phytoconstituents that may be useful adjuvant for anti-oxidant formulations. The present study was carried out to preliminary phytochemical and antioxidant activity of whole plant of Acanthospermum hispidum DC. Preliminary quality chemical test for different extract shows the presence of alkaloids, sterols, carbohydrate and glycosides, fixed oils and fats, phenolic compounds, tannins and flavones and flavonoids. The ethanolic extract of whole plant of Acanthospermum hispidum DC exhibited significant antioxidant activity by total antioxidant activity assay, nitric acid free radical scavenging activity assay, reducing power assay and hydrogen peroxide free radical scavenging assay. The results of this study showed that phenolic rich fractions of plant has strong antioxidant activity by inhibiting, reducing power, hydroxyl radical and hydrogen peroxide and nitric oxide scavenging when compared with standard.
