THE DUAL ROLE OF EXCIPIENTS IN DRUG STABILITY

Pharmaceutical excipients are substances other than the pharmacologically active drug or prodrug which are contained in a finished pharmaceutical product dosage form and play important roles in delivery, manufacture and performance of medications. A thorough knowledge of the chemical and physical stability of drugs and dosage forms is critical in the development and evaluation of pharmaceuticals. When designing dosage forms it is important to be aware of the potential physical and chemical interactions between drugs and excipients which can affect the chemical nature, the stability and bioavailability of drugs and, consequently, their therapeutic efficacy and safety. Excipients are better known as promoters of degradation. However their is potential for excipients to prevent or retard degradation The present review covers various examples of  degradation of the drug catalysed by excipients and also discusses the approaches for product stabilization through excipients.
