  MICROSPONGES: A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW

Remarkable changes have been observed from last four decades in modification of drug release pattern. Successful implementation of microparticle technology invited resolution in pharmaceutical field. Microsponges (MS) are porous drug carrier, suitable for designing of topical cream, gel, powder (typically 10-25 microns in diameter loaded with active ingredient), or can be taken orally as tablet or capsule form. When applied to the skin, the microsponge releases its active ingredient on a time mode and also in response to other stimuli (rubbing, temperature, pH etc). Microsponge systems are non-irritating, non-mutagenic, non-allergenic and non-toxic. Microsponge delivery system (MDS) technology is being currently used in cosmetics, over the counter (OTC) skin care, sunscreen and prescription products.
