Antibacterial and Antifungal properties of Distemonanthus benthamianus (Fabaceae) Crude Extract

The stem bark of Distemonanthus benthamianus (Bail) was extracted with hexane and methanol and tested for their antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, seven strains of Streptococcus mutans and three pathogenic yeast Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis, and Candida krusei ATCC 6825. Preliminary phytochemical screening showed that the extract contained alkaloids, tannins, saponins and traces of terpenoids. The extract showed broad spectrum antimicrobial activity against the tested organisms. The least activity (14-mm zone of inhibition, MIC and MBC values of 25mg/mL) was demonstrated against C. tropicalis and highest activity (24-mm, zone of inhibition MIC and MBC values of 12.5mg/mL) was demonstrated against C. krusei ATCC 6825. Streptococcus mutans was completely killed in the space of 4hrs of contact time with the extract in the bactericidal activity. The antibacterial and antifungal activity of D. benthamianus suggests its use clinically as an oral treatment against Candida infections and in the prevention of dental diseases such as caries.
