Pharmacognosy of Hedyotis corymbosa (l.) Lam.

Hedyotis corymbosa was subjected to anatomical and micromorphological studies in order to locate and identify important biomarkers for correct identification of the plant species, in presence of its other adulterant species. Anatomy of leaf showed absence of any particular character in the midrib, but showed raphide bundles in the lamina. Stem was square shaped, showing angular ridges. Root was diffused porous, and showed annular arrangement of xylem, with layers of libriform fibres alternating with layers of tracheids. Root also showed presence of raphide bundles in the cork. The plant showed absent of trichomes or glands. Average stomatal index calculated to be 23.15, palisade ratio 30.45, vein islet number 52.14, and no vein terminations. Whole plant powder showed characters like raphides, epidermal cells showing net-like arrangement, and serrated leaf edges.
