  Momordica charantia: A comprehensive review
   

Bitter melon commonly called as karela in India, consist of number of constituents which contribute to nutritional value of the plant. It has been long used in India, Japan, China, Philippines, America and many other countries as a folk remedy for diabetes mellitus, constipation, as an abortifacient and an anthelmintic The main constituents of karela are triterpene, protein, steroid, alkaloid, inorganic, lipid, and phenolic compounds, which are responsible for biological and pharmacological activities including anti-diabetic, anti-cancerous and anti-tumorous, anti-microbial, anti-viral, anthelmintic, antimalarial, anti-ulcerative and immunomodulatory. Thus we can say that bitter melon although bitter in taste but is filled with number of qualities in it for curing ailments in human being. This review illustrates certain therapeutic applications of bitter melon in brief.
